Erika Steuerwald is an associate attorney with the health care litigation practice group. Erika focuses her practice on the defense of medical professionals throughout all stages of litigation, including depositions, mediations and trial settings. The majority of her practice concentrates on representing clients in federal court, specifically representing medical professionals who are sued by incarcerated individuals for violations of their civil rights under 42 U.S.C. 1983.
Prior to joining Katz Korin Cunningham, Erika worked as a Deputy Attorney General in the Indiana Office of the Attorney General’s Medical Licensing Section. In this role, she investigated and prosecuted licensure complaints against various health care practitioners, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, and health facility administrators.
Erika also worked as Staff Attorney at the Indiana State Department of Health, where her practice focused on administrative litigation and regulatory enforcement involving home health care agencies, health care facilities, and environmental matters.
Erika received her law degree from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law with a certificate in Health Law. As a law student, she gained valuable experience working as a judicial extern to Magistrate Judge Mark Dinsmore of the Southern District Court of Indiana. Additionally, Erika served as Senior Legislative Assistant and Intern Director for the Indiana House of Representatives and as Deputy Legislative Director for the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration.
Erika graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a Bachelor of Arts, where she was a Cox Scholar and a Director of the Indiana University Memorial Union Board. Erika is active in the Indianapolis community, serving in executive leadership roles with the Junior League of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Women in the Law Division. Erika is also a 2019–2020 graduate of the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.
