Erika Steuerwald attorney health care law Katz Korin Cunningham

Erika Steuerwald is an associate attorney with the Health Care Practice Group. Erika focuses her practice on the defense of medical professionals throughout all stages of litigation, including depositions, mediations and trial settings. She handles a wide variety of matters ranging from medical malpractice actions, correctional and civil rights actions, license disciplinary investigations and complaints, administrative proceedings and judicial reviews, and general civil defense.

Erika brings a significant background in representing health care practitioner’s whose license is being investigated or restricted by a professional licensing board to the team of health care attorneys at Katz Korin Cunningham. Investigations and restrictions against a license may result from complaints filed by patients or others against the practitioner or from arrests, concerns over substance abuse or referrals from other investigative agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). If a health care practitioner is notified of an investigation, the best action to take is to retain an experienced attorney. Erika is intimately aware of the actions and procedure used in board proceedings.

Prior to joining Katz Korin Cunningham, Erika worked as a deputy attorney general in the Indiana Office of the Attorney General’s Medical Licensing Section. She investigated licensure complaints against health care practitioners including physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, physician’s assistants, health facility administrators, and behavioral health professionals. Erika also has experience working with the Indiana State Department of Health focusing on investigation and enforcement actions involving nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health care agencies, and hospitals. As a result, she knows those investigating a complaint, she is well versed in the procedure with a complaint, and she is knowledgeable about protecting the health care practitioner’s rights. She understands the devastating impact an investigation might have with a professional license. Erika should be contacted to assist with appearances before a board, substance abuse recovery, and be by the medical professional's side to provide counsel and assistance at any hearing.

Erika has a strong background in health care policy and the legislative process. During law school, Erika worked full-time for the Indiana General Assembly as a Legislative Assistant and Intern Director. Erika also worked for Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, where she advocated for passage of Indiana’s Health Indiana Plan (HIP 2.0) bill and legislation addressing addiction treatment and substance abuse issues. Additionally, she gained valuable experience working as a judicial extern to Magistrate Judge Mark Dinsmore of the Southern District Court of Indiana. Following graduation from law school, Erika worked in government relations where she advocated for businesses before the Indiana General Assembly, Congress, and various state and federal agencies.

Erika graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a Bachelor of Arts, where she was a Cox Scholar and a Director of the Indiana University Memorial Union Board. Erika is active in the Indianapolis community, serving in executive leadership roles with the Junior League of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Women in the Law Division. Erika is also a 2019 – 2020 graduate of the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series.
